Vimeo is stepping up its game in the immersive video space. The platform has officially added support for regular 180° video and plans to roll out full Apple Immersive Video support by the end of the year.
While YouTube has supported 180° video for more than eight years, Vimeo is on track to become the first major user-uploaded video platform to embrace Apple’s cutting-edge Immersive Video format. Up until now, Apple Immersive Videos have primarily been available through Apple TV or dedicated apps made by individual creators.
Apple’s Immersive Video format is designed to deliver a truly lifelike viewing experience. It features 180° stereoscopic 3D visuals with an impressive 4K×4K resolution per eye, running at 90 frames per second, combined with HDR and spatial audio for maximum realism.
In our Vision Pro review, Apple’s Immersive Video technology received high praise for its clarity and depth. However, it’s not possible to record or cast these videos, so the experience remains exclusive to those with access to Apple’s Vision Pro headset.
Vimeo’s commitment to immersive formats isn’t new. With the launch of its visionOS app about a year ago, Vimeo became the only major video-sharing platform to natively support spatial video — Apple’s version of rectangular stereoscopic 3D video encoded using the Apple HEVC Stereo Video Profile (MV-HEVC). This includes uploads directly from iPhones or Vision Pro headsets.
By expanding to include Apple Immersive Video, Vimeo is positioning itself as a frontrunner in next-generation video experiences. The company expects to officially launch this support before the end of the year, marking a major milestone for immersive content creators and viewers alike.
