The mixed reality art and education app Pencil – Learn to Draw has officially launched with a major update, adding new lessons, modes, and features to help budding artists improve their skills.
Originally released in early access last September, Pencil is developed by Lead Head and takes a unique approach to teaching drawing. By blending traditional pencil-and-paper sketching with mixed reality overlays, the app offers guided lessons, free-draw practice, and digital tools that make learning interactive and fun.
Campaign Mode: The Academy
The full release introduces a brand-new campaign mode called “The Academy.” This structured progression system includes over 50 step-by-step lessons, guiding learners through everything from basic cartoons to complex anatomy. With these additions, the total number of lessons now reaches 83, giving artists plenty of material to explore while tracking their progress.
Expanded Features and Improvements
Alongside the Academy, Pencil also brings several other enhancements:
- Updated visuals and interface for a smoother experience
- New tutorials to help beginners get started quickly
- Gallery Mode that lets you capture and showcase your finished artwork
- An experimental digital drawing feature, compatible with either the back of your controller or the MX Ink stylus
Mixed Reality Meets Creativity
One of Pencil’s biggest strengths lies in how it combines physical drawing with mixed reality guidance. The app overlays outlines and instructions directly onto your paper, helping learners build confidence and improve technique in a more engaging way than traditional methods.

With its full release, Pencil – Learn to Draw is now available on Quest 3 and Quest 3S for $12.99. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to refine your artistic skills, Pencil offers an innovative path to learning how to draw through the power of mixed reality.
