Out of Sight VR Review-in-Progress: A Unique Vision for Immersive Horror

A hauntingly clever twist on VR gameplay.

Virtual reality often aims to immerse you directly into the shoes of the protagonist, but Out of Sight VR takes a different—and highly effective—approach. Rather than casting you as the central figure of the story, it puts you in the role of an observer, a guide, and in this case, a beloved teddy bear. This clever twist on perspective results in a horror puzzle game that feels deeply engaging while offering a refreshing take on how VR can shape storytelling.

A Disturbing Mansion and a Desperate Escape

From the moment Out of Sight VR begins, it’s clear something is very wrong in the mansion where young Sophie resides. Sophie is blind, terrified, and trying to escape—her only guide is you, her magically animated teddy bear. As her vision, you’re not the one in danger, but you bear the heavy responsibility of navigating the perilous path to freedom.

This dynamic makes Out of Sight both emotionally impactful and mechanically unique. The bond between Sophie and her teddy adds emotional depth, while the second-person VR perspective offers gameplay challenges rarely seen in the genre.

A Shift in Perspective—Literally

The game hinges on shifting perspectives. When Sophie is holding you close, the view feels almost first-person—until you glance down and see her clinging tightly to you. But for her to interact with objects or solve puzzles, she must place you down on designated spots. At these points, the camera shifts to an isometric angle, and Sophie becomes the one taking action—though only within the limits of your line of sight.

Early on, you unlock a special ability to “stare” at certain locks to break them open. However, Sophie often needs to manipulate the environment just to get them in your line of sight. This back-and-forth interplay creates interesting puzzle dynamics that capitalize on the unique control scheme and dual-character design.

What begins as simple tasks quickly evolves into more elaborate challenges. You’ll need to plan ahead—scouting areas, repositioning yourself for better visibility, and helping Sophie avoid traps and navigate the eerie mansion.

A Chilling, Atmospheric Horror Experience

Rather than relying heavily on jump scares, Out of Sight VR leans into atmospheric horror. The game is filled with unsettling moments—shadows glimpsed from the corner of your eye, distant whispers, or chilling sound cues that catch you off-guard. VR amplifies all of this, pulling you into the creepy, mysterious mansion and making each step forward feel tense and meaningful.

Between puzzles, you’ll encounter light stealth sequences. These include avoiding the watchful eyes of sinister caretakers or sidestepping bells and mousetraps that could reveal your presence. These moments add pacing variety and build tension without ever feeling frustrating.

Visually, the game is stunning. While some environments may start to feel a bit repetitive, the overall presentation is detailed, polished, and perfectly suited for the game’s eerie tone.

VR Integration—Effective, But Still in Progress

Although Out of Sight VR functions well in a VR headset, it’s not built exclusively for it—yet. At this stage, tracked motion is limited, with only basic hand movements available. It’s entirely playable with a traditional controller, which speaks to its accessibility but also hints at untapped potential. The developers have indicated plans to expand VR-specific controls, and that’s something worth watching for as the game continues development.

Even in its current Early Access state, Out of Sight VR offers a memorable and fully playable experience. The roughly three-hour campaign is well-paced, emotionally resonant, and mechanically inventive. Its blend of clever puzzle design, haunting atmosphere, and unique second-person perspective makes it stand out from most VR horror titles.

With more updates and polish on the horizon—especially in terms of deeper VR controls—Out of Sight VR is already a hidden gem worth your attention. It’s a sight to behold, even if you’re only seeing it through the eyes of a teddy bear.

Stay tuned for a full review once the 1.0 version is released—this is one haunting journey we can’t wait to revisit.
