The popular VR multiplayer shooter VAIL just rolled out a brand-new free-to-play Extraction mode, now available in early access on both Steam and Quest. After launching its social hub last year, the team at AEXLAB has spent nearly ten months developing this new mode with the goal of making extraction-style gameplay more accessible to new players.
A More Approachable Extraction Experience
In this mode, players are dropped into the depths of Reyn, where they must recover encrypted data, rare technology, and valuable resources. The challenge doesn’t just come from rival players—but also from the mysterious creatures inhabiting the island.
The gameplay is structured around six squads, each consisting of three players, all fighting for survival and the chance to escape with the best loot. The map brings dynamic weather elements such as heavy rain, fog, and thunder, adding more unpredictability and immersion to each raid.
New Systems and Gameplay Enhancements
AEXLAB has introduced an advanced shield and ammo tier system, adding more depth to VAIL’s already solid gunplay. Ammo interacts differently depending on shield tiers, which means choosing the right equipment becomes more strategic than ever.
Another welcome addition is the ability to revive downed teammates, reducing downtime and keeping squads in the action longer. The developers specifically aimed to avoid scenarios where players are forced to sit and wait while the rest of their team continues the match.
What’s Coming Next
As early access progresses, AEXLAB plans to expand the core gameplay loop with new in-game missions that guide players toward a randomized boss encounter. The studio is also developing customizable player homes where friends can meet up and prepare for raids together.
Early access will include periodic wipes to support testing and balance adjustments, but the team has confirmed there are no intentions to include forced wipes once the mode reaches full release.
