Apple Vision Pro Refresh with M4 Chip and New Strap Expected This Year

Apple appears to be gearing up for a refresh of the Vision Pro headset, and according to recent reports, it could arrive sooner than expected. The updated model is now rumored to feature the powerful M4 chip and a redesigned strap aimed at improving long-term comfort.

This news comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who states that the next version of the Vision Pro could launch as early as this year. The current Vision Pro, released earlier in 2024, runs on Apple’s M2 chip, making this upgrade to the M4 a substantial performance leap. Apple claims the M4 delivers 50% faster CPU performance and up to four times more GPU power than the M2, along with a Neural Engine that is 60% more powerful—greatly boosting the device’s ability to handle complex visual tasks and on-device AI.

Interestingly, this contrasts with previous reports. Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had earlier suggested that the next Vision Pro would come with an M5 chip and begin production in late 2025, with no other notable changes. Gurman himself had also previously mentioned Apple was exploring a “cheaper and lighter” version, but the latest update now leans toward a more modest refresh.

At this point, the only confirmed changes seem to be the internal upgrade to the M4 and a new strap design. The redesigned strap is said to improve comfort for users wearing the headset for extended periods, though there’s no mention of major weight reduction or external redesign.

Adding to the confusion, a leaker recently shared images of what appears to be the next Vision Pro’s battery cable, now in a “graphite dark blue” color compared to the current silver version. This leaker also described the headset as noticeably thinner and lighter, though these claims haven’t been echoed by Gurman or Kuo. A Chinese media outlet also reported that production of the new headset has already started, citing specific suppliers involved in the process.

Despite the conflicting details, one thing is clear—multiple sources agree that Apple is preparing a new Vision Pro headset, potentially for release later this year. The exact upgrades and features remain a mystery, but a boost in performance and comfort seems likely.

As always, until Apple makes an official announcement, these updates should be taken with a grain of salt. Still, for fans and early adopters of spatial computing, the possibility of a sleeker and faster Vision Pro is definitely something to look forward to.
